If a pipe has burst
- Turn off the water at the main straight away.
- If water is near power points or appliances, turn off the power at the switchboard if it is safe to do so.
- Move valuables away from the water and call a plumber.
Leaks you can see
Dripping taps, running toilets and leaking shower heads waste water and add to your water bill. They are usually quick repairs.
Leaks you cannot see
A water bill that is higher than usual, a water meter that keeps moving when every tap is off, damp patches on walls or floors, or a soggy patch in the yard can all point to a hidden leak. Plumbers can use leak detection equipment to find it with less digging.
Checking your meter
Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water, then read your water meter. Wait an hour without using any water and read it again. If the numbers have moved, there is likely a leak.
