Common hot water problems
- No hot water at all, or water that runs warm then cold.
- Water leaking from the tank, the relief valve or the pipes around the unit.
- Rusty or discoloured hot water.
- Noises such as banging or rumbling from the tank.
- A pilot light that keeps going out on a gas system.
Repair or replace?
Many faults, such as a failed thermostat, element or relief valve, can be repaired. A tank that is leaking from the body usually cannot. The plumber will tell you which applies after looking at the system, and can explain the running costs of each replacement option.
Types of systems
Electric storage
Simple to replace like for like, though running costs can be higher than other options.
Gas
Storage and continuous flow systems. Gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter.
Heat pump and solar
These use less electricity to heat water and suit Mackay's warm climate. Ask the plumber whether any government rebates currently apply to your installation.
What to have ready
- The brand and size of your current system, usually on a label on the tank.
- Whether it is electric, gas, solar or heat pump.
- Where it is installed: outside, in a cupboard or in the roof.
